It's a story we've heard too many times.

"I lost my driver's license because somebody thought I was too old," said Evelyn, 97. "But I didn't have a mark against me at all. I was heartbroken about that. I really was."

Worse, she said, "It made me feel old. It made me feel useless."

Evelyn lives in a retirement community. A bus used to come to take residents to the grocery store twice a week, but then the service mysteriously ceased.

"A lot of people were stuck around here, like my neighbor, Joyce," Evelyn said. Joyce worried that if she didn't find a way to the grocery store she'd have to move to another retirement community where grocery store transportation was available. But Joyce didn't want to move.

"I said, 'Joyce, I'll get you to the grocery store every week,'" Evelyn recalled. It was a simple promise made for a simple reason: "I'm here! I'm on the earth. If I can contribute, I should. Shouldn't we all? I don't have money to give, but I can give of myself, and my time. We're asked to love our neighbor, be a friend. That will give you joy."

See the great lengths Evelyn went to keep her promise:
