How you can help your health care work better

April 21, 2019

This is part of Next Avenue's AGE-FRIENDLY HEALTH CARE SPECIAL REPORT supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation.

Aging well requires doctors that treat more than just your conditions, but your entire self — taking into account your unique background, challenges and desires.

Do your doctors know what is most important to you? If not, how can you best help them understand?

On April 25, Next Avenue hosted a virtual town hall event (watch below) that explored steps you can take to talk to your doctor and get the most out of your health care. We were joined by two leading experts who answered questions, offered advice and suggested resources:

  • Liz Seegert is a journalist who has covered aging, health policy and health care for Next Avenue, Kaiser Health News, AARP.com and more. She's the topic editor on aging for the Association of Health Care Journalists and was previously a Journalism in Aging Fellow for the Gerontological Society of America.
  • Dr. VJ Periyakoil is an associate professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and the director of Stanford's palliative care education and training program. She's a nationally-recognized leader in geriatrics and palliative care and is a faculty member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative.
