Next Avenue’s Influencers in Aging is an annual list of remarkable people changing how we age and think about aging in America. First published in 2015, the list recognizes thought leaders, executives, writers, artists, researchers, health professionals, entrepreneurs and everyday people who are helping redefine what it means to grow old in America.
We’re excited to offer the public an opportunity to nominate influencers for the 2020 list. By recognizing the people making a difference in aging, we can highlight new ideas, spark conversation and inspire others to engage in this important work. This year’s nomination window will open soon.
What is Influencers in Aging?
Next Avenue is committed to providing vital ideas, context, and perspectives on issues that matter most as we age.
Next Avenue’s Influencers in Aging list is our opportunity to reflect on the past year and acknowledge those people whom the editors believe, based on their expertise, have been most influential in the ways we think, and what we know, about aging and who have made the greatest impact. Whether they are advocates, researchers, thought leaders, innovators, writers and/or experts, what they have in common is their work pushing beyond traditional boundaries to change our understanding of what it means to grow older. Candidates for consideration represent the fields of health and well-being, caregiving, personal finance, work and purpose, volunteering, arts and entertainment, lifestyle, housing, relationships and technology and may be any age and live anywhere in the world. We strive for candidates who represent a spectrum of race and ethnicity, cultural identity, geographic location, sexuality and gender identity, and points of view.
What is the selection process?
The 12 Influencers are selected by Next Avenue staff from a pool of public nominations and recommendations by Next Avenue editors. Influencers are selected because of the work and thinking they are doing currently or have been doing in the past year and is not a measure of their cumulative impact. A person can be an Influencer in Aging more than once, when warranted, but preference is given to people who have not previously been named Influencers in Aging.
