If you asked, most retirees would likely say that eye health is important to them. However, do we really know as much about maintaining our eye health into retirement as we think? Maybe not, according to a recent survey of Next Avenue readers.

In this survey, we asked readers about how they access their vision coverage and what is important to them when it comes to their eye health. The overall message? How to maintain or get vision coverage may be blurry, but what people want is clear; they want options, access to quality care, regular eye exams and little worry when it comes to their vision care in retirement.

Options: From coverage options, to fashionable choices for glasses, having options is key according to respondents. That said, one in four respondents don’t know what options are available when they retire, and almost half of respondents (46%) either don’t know their vision care options in retirement, or are retired and do not have eye care coverage.

Access: Another major concern for many as they transition into retirement is maintaining access to the doctor (and the same quality care) that they have become accustomed to over the years, even if their vision care coverage is changing.

Additionally, when it came to what readers valued most in terms of a vision insurance provider, access to quality care was the most important factor for 63% of respondents.

Exams: The older we get, the more likely we are to see the quality of our vision start to slip away and the risk of eye-related diseases increase. Most respondents get this and understand the value of a yearly exam, with 59% of respondents reporting receiving eye exams once per year. An additional 23% receive an exam at least once every two years.

Little worry: Once you take care of your eye health, you can focus on the things most important to you, such as spending time with your loved ones and continuing your favorite hobbies. According to survey data, avoiding eye-related diseases was just as important to respondents as continuing your regular activities. Another key factor to limit worry for those surveyed, is keeping out-of-pocket costs low.

Fortunately, there are options like VSP® Individual Vision Plans that can help with all the above.  Individual Vision Plans make it easy to find the right combination of quality care, low costs and a large selection of glasses.
