Edie Grossfield

Edie is the editor for Next Avenue’s Health and Caregiving coverage.

She directs daily health stories that span nutrition, fitness, sexual and mental health. Edie is particularly interested in research on Alzheimer’s disease and human longevity. She’s also written about the challenges many cancer patients face in accessing opioid pain medications as pharmacists and insurance companies institute more restrictions on the drugs.

Edie’s caregiving stories offer guidance for the many who are caregivers for their parents, spouses or other loved ones (or will be someday). She has first-hand experience with how these issues impact individuals and families, as her father has Alzheimer’s and her mother is his primary caregiver. Edie also is a caregiver to her wife, who at age 54 had a stroke that left her with disabilities. This experience aided her in writing a recent story about ways to recognize the lesser-known signs of stroke in hopes of raising awareness.

She has been a journalist for more than 20 years, reporting and editing for newspapers and magazines. Earlier in her career, Edie covered a range of issues, including a persisting achievement gap between white students and students of color in a large Minnesota school district; the tensions between developers, neighborhoods and historic preservationists in a fast-growing city; and the impacts of urban sprawl on communities and the environment.

Before joining Next Avenue in October 2018, she worked in internal communications for a large health care organization.

Edie has a bachelor’s degree in communications and media and a master’s degree in journalism, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A lifelong Minnesota native, her love of nature led her to the North Shore of the Great Lake Superior, where she lived for three years before returning to the Twin Cities with her wife and their 11-year-old Brussels Griffon dog.
