Grace Birnstengel is a reporter, writer and editor for Next Avenue. She recently concluded a year-long series on how health care could and should meet the needs of aging Americans. Grace also served as the lead editor on a series about end-of-life care, choices and conversations.

Grace has a vested interest in exploring aging from diverse perspectives and covering how the intersections of identities (race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status) affect how we grow older and navigate the world.

She joined Next Avenue in September 2017 after years of experience covering music. Her work has appeared in Twin Cities Pride Magazine, The St. Paul Pioneer Press, Minneapolis–St. Paul’s alt-weekly City Pages, The Riveter Magazine,, 89.3 The Current, VICE’s Live Nation TV and more.

Grace holds a bachelor of arts in journalism and gender, women and sexuality studies from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities with an emphasis in magazine writing and editing.

She lives in Minneapolis and works in St. Paul. (She has no allegiance to either Twin City.) She enjoys seeing live music, thrift shopping and going country dancing.
